Who Are You People?
Cindy, the director of T.R.A.C. in The Woodlands, Texas, answered the phone on the second ring. “Hello, This is Cindy.”
Brandy, a supervisor with Child Protective Services in Brownwood, Texas, didn’t waste time with a greeting, “Who are you people?”
Cindy held the phone to her ear, not sure how to answer. Brandy had driven seven hours to bring eight girls to camp. Was she regretting that decision now? Would Brandy back out the following weekend with the boys she planned to bring?
Brandy didn’t wait for Cindy to answer. “We just stopped for a bathroom break on our way home, and Sammy has talked nonstop for two hours.”
Cindy remembered the beautiful girl who’d conquered her giant at camp. Prior to T.R.A.C., she’d been terrified of horses.
“Seriously,” Brandy asked again. “I’ve never heard Sammy say more than a sentence or two, and she’s smiling and laughing. What have you done to these kids?”
“Nothing, really.” Cindy tried to swallow the lump in her throat. “Just loved them.”
